CBD Cream: what you need to know

CBD has become one of the key ingredients in many beauty products and there’s lots you should know before trying your first CBD cream or other CBD-based skincare cosmetic product.

Hemp has been used for many years in the cosmetic industry, as hemp seed oil is known to be a natural moisturizer rich in fatty acids. Yet, although they are sometimes confused, CBD is different from hemp oil or hemp seed oil and provides a whole new range of benefits to your skin – above and beyond those provided by hemp seed oil alone.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. Yes, it’s a little hard to pronounce so it’s been shortened to CBD. Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring substance found in the cannabis plant family. In this plant family, there are many types of cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana being the most famous. Both plants have been utilized for centuries for their impressive industrial, dietary and psychoactive properties. Yet, what sets Hemp and Marijuana apart is the level of THC they contain. THC is the psychotropic substance found in Marijuana, it’s what produces a “high” and is a controlled substance in many places around the world. Hemp, or more specifically, Industrial Hemp, on the other hand, has only traces of THC (generally less than 0.2%) which means Hemp doesn’t produce that “high” effect. Cannabidiol is extracted from the Hemp plant and can be isolated to over 99% purity, or it can also be made synthetically.

How does CBD benefit your skin?

When it comes to the topical application of CBD in oils, creams, lotions, balms and serums, CBD is a recognized active ingredient and has been found to possess some very impressive properties.

As an Antioxidant, it is known to fight ‘free radicals’. While they might sound like fun, ‘free radicals’ are actually harmful. They cause damage to cells, proteins and DNA and are also strongly linked to aging. Free Radicals, or oxidative stress, are caused by exposure to toxins, the types of toxins that appear in everyday life, such as pollution, food, alcohol and cigarette smoke. But, while they are harmful, they are also part of life, some would even say essential to life and can’t be avoided. However, antioxidants fight against these free radicals and help prevent the damage they can cause. CBD is an excellent antioxidant and when used in skincare and cosmetics may help prevent skin damage and fight the signs of aging.

Anti-Inflammatory. The human body often reacts to injury or an invasion of toxins with an inflammatory response. This response can often cause redness, swelling, heat or pain. If the cause of the inflammation is not resolved, the inflammation begins to damage the body’s tissues and cells. Hence, ingredients that provide anti-inflammatory properties can help to prevent or reduce both the symptoms and the damage caused by inflammation. CBD is an effective anti-inflammatory.

Anti Seborrhoeic is not only another difficult word to pronounce, but it’s also another recognized function of CBD. Simply put, it means that it helps prevent or relieve the excessive secretion of sebum. Sebum, an oily substance, is our skin’s natural moisturizing agent, but too much of it can cause skin problems like dermatitis and acne. Anti seborrhoeic ingredients like CBD work to balance the skin’s moisture and natural oil levels.

Skin Conditioning which means it acts to enhance the appearance, keeping the skin soft, smooth, supple and healthy-looking. CBD is a recognized Skin Conditioning agent.

From nourishing and restoring to free radical fighting, it’s clear that CBD is a potent ingredient with many convincing skincare benefits.

About hemp seed oil and skincare

As mentioned above, Hemp seed oil, while it has many beneficial properties, is totally different from CBD oil. Harvested by cold-pressing hemp seeds, hemp seed oil is now commonly used in the cosmetic and food industry.  While most of the hemp seed oils available today don’t contain CBD oil nor other cannabinoids, it is true that some CBD oils on the market are made by mixing CBD and hemp seed oil together. This is why there is often confusion. In fact, a lot of cosmetic brands are using hemp seed oil in their products because it is rich in omega-6 fatty acids, and acts as an effective moisturizer by balancing the skin’s oil production without clogging your pores.
